Black Friday or Lost Minds?
This article is written after reading the following blog on CNN titled: ‘Thefts, stampedes make Black Friday blue for some’. Uhm, is it only me or is there something wrong with us? Do not get me wrong, I do not mind a little shopping either especially when I get a good deal and I also like to give gifts to my friends and family too but have you people gone mad? Have you noticed the string the puppeteer master is holding around your neck? Do you not feel insane? Come on just a little bit? If throughout the whole year you do not realize what is being done to you at least get it now!
You are controlled by the enormous companies you yourself work for. It is sad to see that the American culture is slowly declining and consisting of nothing more than shopping. And I am very surprised that even after the huge hits people all felt throughout the country Black Friday is crazier than ever before. I always thought Black Friday’s were a joke. I never participated in it but definitely never judged anyone for doing so either. It is a genius concept really, no doubt about it, but how much more stuff do we need? And do we really need them so bad that we sleep outside the store for 2 days? Or that we elbow the other person next to us just to get their first? What for? For a toy, for a new TV, for a new camera? The old one doesn’t work anymore? What more of a shockwave do we need to understand consumerism has got to stop the way it is? An earthquake? Nah, that doesn’t do anything. A tsunami? Doubt it would do much. A nuclear bomb? What do we need to reset the values we can have? Obviously the financial crisis did little to nothing. Yes we became more price sensitive, but we are still shopping, we are still consuming, and we are still elbowing the other guy so that new gadget that came out last week can be ours right at this second.
I do like gadgets too, I do keep up with the items because it is interesting to see how imaginative and creative and technically brilliant people are. I am no different than any of you – I like stuff too. I like my Ipod, and my Mac, I like my green eggs and ham….oh wait that’s another article. But my Ipod is the first that ever came out, and my Mac, it is now almost 3 years old and it works just fine. I don’t feel the need to have the latest of everything, I do not feel I have to keep up with the Jones’s, and I definitely do not feel pressured by my 10 year old that I have to get her something because she just saw it on TV 5 minutes ago and she absolutely has to have it. Really, we can all enjoy shopping, good deals, and the joy of giving but maybe with a tad of an attitude adjustment?
